What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes
When a transponder is interrogated, it sends an encoded signal that is accompanied by the four-digit code. This signal is called an SQUAWK code and forms the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. It also serves to send a specific message to air traffic control in the event of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable speak on the radio. They are vital for safe flying.
Every aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar queries by displaying an identifier. This enables ATC to locate the aircraft on a busy radar screen. Transponders can be found in various modes that differ in how they respond to questions. Mode A transmits only the code and mode C provides information about altitude. Mode S transponders transmit more detailed information such as callsigns and position. This can be useful when flying in crowded airspace.

PIN Codes
A PIN code consists of a set of numbers (usually 4 or 6 digits), which are used to gain access to an item or service. A smart phone, as an example, has PIN numbers that users must enter each time they use the device. The third digit identifies the car's assembly division, while the fourth through eighth digits define the model type, the type of restraint system, body type, and transmission and engine codes. The ninth number is the check digit which prevents fraud by ensuring that the VIN number isn't altered.
In North America, 10th through 17th numbers of the VIN are known as the Vehicle Identification Section (VIS). The tenth number indicates the year of the vehicle's production, and the eleventh digit indicates the assembly plant that produced the vehicle. The digits from tenth to 17th can also include additional information like features or options installed in the car.
The last six digits of the VIN code are a sequential serial number that is unique to the vehicle or truck. The final digit is also the check number, and the remaining numbers are transliterated to numbers. The first digit is given a value of 8, and each subsequent number increases in value by one, until the seventh digit is nine, which then becomes two. Then, the whole VIN is translated back into its original form by multiplying the weight of each digit by 11. If the result is equal to the check number, then the VIN is valid.
Data Transfer
